I'd like to talk about the army problem in Russia. Most young men must serve for one year. However, most of them, who must serve, don't serve. A simply not-serving is a crime, so people need to do something to avoid the law. It costs money - not big money, but it costs.
For many developed countries this situation seems to be strange - there are no problems with the conscription, sometimes there is competition on enrolling the army. All my life I was in thought that this problem is a part of a "Russian soul", and only a year ago I understood that that's just a part of the "Supply and Demand" theme. In most European armies there are a lot of benefits of serving - free education', an experiencing of management. In Russia that's very dangerous and useless year. That's why people in Russia don't want to go to the army.

I didn't know that conscription was mandatory in Russia! How does everyone avoid it?
ReplyDeleteWell, there are four popular ways to behave in the age from 18 to 27:
Delete-To go to the army (for losers).
-To have a serious disease or a certificate of having it (it costs money).
-To study in a university - when you are getting bachelor or master or PhD, you don't go to the army.
-To hide from the army and police - don't get suspicious mail, avoid suspicious calls and people :). You can also "born" children or break arms or legs, e.t.c.
I can see why people want to go to college! I actually knew something about this from the movie "Elena." Have you seen it?
